Not sure if I ever posted my M31 Andromeda Galaxy photos before, but I improved on them a bit last night.
I went out with my biggest and smallest scopes, to image Jupiter with the biggest and auto-guide using my smallest. But that didn't want to work, so I swapped the cameras and imaged Andromeda instead. Once I do some better Photoshopping I'll have a much nicer image to show I hope, as that one above is a bif naff. But at least it proved my auto-guiding works. Mostly. I've been able to image for a minute, max, with the scope mount simply tracking by itself, but with the laptop sending signals to correct the mount as soon as it notices stars drifting, means I can expose the shots for much longer. Went to 2-minutes for the above, 6 or 7 images stacked, but I should be able to go much longer really.
Quite an object though. 2.2 million light years away, but in the big scheme of things that's not that far. Imagine our galaxy is a frisbee flying through the air. Andromeda is another, slightly larger frisbee, just 15 or 20 feet away. Apparently travelling towards each other!!
Makes you think though...there must be life out there.
EDIT: Second image is the same original, just processed differently to try and not blow the core out too much. It's quite a blue galaxy anyway, but my image overdoes that a little. _________________ 250Hz: (L/R)

A nearby galaxy in the last post, an even nearer one in this post...our own Galaxy, the Milky Way, as seen from my patio last night through a 10-22mm lens at 10mm, and using my lovely new Canon EOS 450D camera. (12.2Mp, and has this Live View option where you can compose the image on the 3" display...not something you can do on many DSLRs. Makes focussing on stars a doddle, especially as you can zoom into the image. Not only that, but you can connect the camera to a PC and preview the image from there AND control the camera from the PC. Even lets you program it to take a certain number of photos at a certain exposure length, meaning you can go away and do something else while it's imaging!)
Only managed to get two 3-minute and one 4-minute shot before there were just too many clouds last night. Plus I only did some quick stacking and editing. Seemed to lose a lot of the dimmer stars in the process, which is a shame...they're visible in the individual images. (When I stacked them the program counted over 18,000 stars in one image!!!) But I quite like it...best I've managed so far. And I caught a plane or satellite as well. Two of them in fact.

Thanks.

I think it's a plane actually, on closer inspection. There are regular red blobs along the line, indicating a flashing light on a wing or something. I'm not sure the camera would pick up satellites at only 10mm to be honest. Hope to take some more long exposures towards Perseus soon though, as the Perseids Meteor shower is meant to be at it's peak around about now. _________________ 250Hz: (L/R)

Tried something a lot easier...a timelapse video made up of about 100 images, each one a 30-second exposure with my 10mm wide-angle lens, then spliced together into a movie. Don't like the angle of the camera, but it was mounted on my telescope tracking mount so there wasn't a way around it really...I've ordered a ball and socket head to get the camera upright next time. Also, YouTube destroys the quality...even in High Quality mode.

Thanks, but that's basically the same as clicking "Watch in High Quality", isn't it. Still not as good as the original 4Mb movie though.
I'm going to try another video-hosting site, which I gather allows much higer, even HD quality videos to be uploaded.
Is this one any better? http://www.vimeo.com/2304884
Doesn't appear to be. _________________ 250Hz: (L/R)
