I cleaned my powerball the other day and now I can't get it over 13k, it feels like its slipping a little and when I try and spin it hard it sounds like its knocking from side to side.

Has anybody tried smoothing the sphere with some fine sandpaper?

Always slows down a bit after a clean I find. Just give it a little time and it'll be back to top speed again.

I know The Force has either talked about or actually tried smoothing the inner-track with some fine sandpaper...he'll have something to say.

I might try it on the newer old-style 250Hz I've got...been spinning it for ages and usually, at the start of a session, I can do good scores on it, but very quickly it feel like it's slipping and the scores drop rapidly...sometimes I can't even get over 11000 with it when my old old one will still allow me to do around 13k. The crap one ALWAYS sounds like something's grating slightly inside. Never taken it apart, so perhaps I should. (Quite fancy having a couple of half-blue half-amber Powerballs. Cool

Send it simply on gyrotek@gmail.com....Smile

Every powerball is slippery for a few moments after a cleaning, but after you can go for good runs Wink

Exactly. The rotor axle is shiny steel...that'll easily slide over a freshly cleaned surface, i.e. the polycarbonate plastic of the Powerball casing. After a while the inner-surface gets a bit rough and allows the rotor axle to grip a little better.

I only clean my 250Hz Powerballs when there's clearly a problem...I still find the best cure is a good half an hour of constant 9k to 10k Powerballing. Really creates for a good "biting" surface for the rotor. Smile

I thing the dust taken from the inner support ring is important for the rotor to be able to accelerate properly...that's why when its clean, it's slippery...

But when there's to much dust, very small vibrations appear and you have to clean before you get tolerance on the rotor's axle.

Well..this is actually quite interesting what you are saying here. You are saying that the tolerance on the rotor axis comes from NOT cleaning the powerball?

That I did not know. I just thought that it was an inherent weakness of the powerball.

The Force

Heyy its only a thought, since I clean my balls when they got a little bit dusty, no tolerance issue, but maybe its also a matter of handling well the ball. And I switch my runs on 2 metal & 2 regulars. Maybe they wear out slower that way...

I still have to experiment about this....

Call me immature Laughing Laughing Laughing

I find cleaning makes the rotor grip better, but I think that's my rusty technique.

Well, I just bought 3 of the powerballs, and after one or two sessions, two of them started making a lot of noise and vibrations. I opened them up, and I saw a lot of white dust that appeared to have flecked off the support band sitting on the tracks of both halves of the powerball. I cleaned these off, and re-assembled the balls.

Right away, the ball felt smoother, but there was also a knocking as if there was a small rut (probably when I closed the powerball up) I ran it around 9-10k for about 30 seconds, the knocking went away, and so has all the nasty vibration!

I can probably attribute the debris as a consequence of my bad technique (when I go for speed with my very weak left arm sometimes I just can't hold on hard enough after)

The debris comes from holding the powerball loosely at higher speeds (which cause the powerball to stop rotating on its second virtual axis).

The Force
