Has anyone else actually tried gripping the Powerball the way Akis does? I've tried a few times, but have never been able to do it. Until last night though - while in the middle of some gentle endurance, I gave it another try, and actually got it going to a semi-decent speed...nearly 12k. Wasn't really trying either.
The grip's awkward, but I think the actual position of the Powerball in relation to the rest of the arm is ideal, and allows for higher speeds. I think I might work on it. _________________ 250Hz: (L/R)

What's exactly the position of the pb in his hand?
Could u send a video showing the exact position of fingers and pb?
I think each powerballer gets used to one technique, but I don't want to discard the perfect technique :-)

I've only ever seen the videos at Powerballs.com, and it's tricky to see what he does, but he sort of has the counter pointing through the curve of his thumb and forefinger. He holds it a bit like it's a pint glass, with the counter pointing straight up.
What I'm thinking is this - imagine a line going straight through the centre of the counter, through the middle of the rotor and out the centre of the hole. Extend this line either way, and I'm going to call it the "Central Axis" of the Powerball.
I've often thought to myself that the ideal position would be to have this "Central Axis" pointing directly up the arm...and I think this is what Akis does.
I think. I don't know...I'm just speculating. _________________ 250Hz: (L/R)

I can do it quite well with my left hand, but not my right hand. I'm having a hiatus at the moment...no Powerballing for a week...but I'll give it another try soon. _________________ 250Hz: (L/R)

The Force | A break. A rest. Since doing 10,000,000 I've not touched my 250Hz again, but I had a quick blast on the Metal the other day and straight away my fingers hurt. It's like my knuckles feel bruised inside. _________________ 250Hz: (L/R)

I have the same feeling with my annular finger. It hurts so much that I couldn't hardly sleep tonight. Just (un)bending the finger or closing the fist it hurts.
Just a suggestion: could we open a thread in the forum talking about therapy or treatment for powerballers? The same for nutrition, of course.. i think 90% of an athlete is nutrition :-)
Btw, I spread "Radio Salil" and "Voltaren" gels in my fingers. Those are anti-inflammatory gels. I can't see any improvement :-( I've also used
"Tiger unguent"... it warms articulations and muscles. Any other miracle products?? :-)

Anyway, back to Akis's technique...
What I've found is that when I hold the Powerball with my left hand, with my hand in the position of holding a pint glass, and the Powerball counter facing straight upwards, if I were to look straight down on the Powerball from above the rotor is rotating clockwise. It feels strange, as though it's in reverse-rotation, but I am able to speed it up with my left hand...I can't with my right.
As the speed increases, I straighten my arm and point it towards the floor and twist my whole arm in a clockwise motion, so that my elbow is pointing directly away from my body and the rotor is facing almost straight upwards. In this position I'm able to speed the Powerball up quite nicely with my whole arm locked rigid, but again, only with my left hand...I simply can't do it with my right.
Akis doesn't use this technique with his right hand either, and that's a weird thing too.
I think people should post their Akis Technique Top Scores here. _________________ 250Hz: (L/R)

Now i'm researching on Akis history
I've been looking through internet and have found the dates on which Akis achieved his records. So you can see his improvements:
m/d/y
10/07/2004 - 14193
11/01/2004 - 14555
12/12/2004 - 14953
01/02/2005 - 15027 (this one was really achieved on 12/27/2005)
02/11/2005 - 15322
03/20/2005 - 15351
04/05/2005 - 15552 (i'm not sure about this date)
06/20/2005 - 15575
08/28/2005 - 15840
10/08/2005 - 16081
11/18/2005 - 16218
As you can see, 2k in just one year
Somewhere in internet I read he landed onto the scoreboard with a score of 13892 rpm, but i'm not sure about the date.
I will also paste an email from Akis to powerballs.com about his 15322 record. I've been only 5 months powerballing and didn't have the chance to read it, but maybe some of you did...
-------------------------------------------------------
Well, did you think that you would get rid of me after the 15K score? Oooh no, not so easily! :-)
It seems to me that if you hold the ball reeeeally tight, literally trapped in your hand, and obtain the best synchronization, then the possibilities are unlimited.
But let me get you the story from the beginning, since I am a little freaked out (despite that I broke my existing world record 3 times on Friday!). It is obvious that beating an already 15k record is not that easy, nor it can be done at just any time. So, after the 15027 (which I could not match for a few weeks), I focused on training, emphasizing mostly on strength mode sessions. On Friday evening I commenced some highest rpm sessions. At the beginning I was getting some low 14k scores. Soon I got over 14400 and 14500 levels and progressively over 14600 level. After a while, I hit a 14700 run. And then, at the very next session, I saw the counter flashing... And what was the new score? An inconceivable 15322!!! Argh! Such a score and I had not set up the camera!:-{
I didn't?t expect it to come out so quickly. I was powerballing for just an hour, while the previous 15027 record was finally got out after 6 hours of continual fully heated powerballing. I knew it was not a counter corruption. The sphere was furiously screaming and pummeling my hand. However I could not prove it. So, the least I could do was to set up my camera and try to match the score. After setting the camera, I had some good high 14k runs and after a while I hit a 15036. However I was not satisfied (despite that this score qualified as 98% of the record), as I felt that the gap from 15 to 15.3 K was significant. So, I continued furiously and finally managed to blast out a 15152 score. I eagerly wanted to match the 15.3k so I continued powerballing. Unfortunately the 15152 was the best score I could do before I was totally drained.
So, I am sending you the video of the 15152 run (the 15322 highest score is seen).
I am not much satisfied with the result but I am most certain that since I hit a 15300 once then I will hit it again. Well, not too soon, since I will not be able to powerball for a while, as there is no skin left in my hands :-)
I have not made any score submission, as I don?t know what to quote. I figure that I certainly qualify for 15152, but the 15322 is up to your appreciation. So please let me know asap what I should submit.
With my best regards
Akis
-------------------------------------------------------
And, to to finish my research, I'm also pasting two answers from Akis, extracted from powerballs.com forum...
-------------------------------------------------------
Actually the way you hold the ball is up to your personal convenience and there is really no standard grip recommended. I apply a different kind of grip with the left and right hands, yet with similar results. On the left hand I hold the ball somewhat unorthodoxly, grabbing it by the side and having the counter outwards between thumb and index finger, while on the right hand I [usually] hold it more conventionally with the counter inwards.
The important issue is that you ensure a very tight grip. The ball should be literally wedged in your hand (than simply held) and you must have it “suffocated” when up at high speeds.
Whichever side you choose to grab, make sure that it is well seated in your palm and feel like having full control over it.
Regards, Akis.
-------------------------------------------------------
The most effective way to hold the ball is the way which provides the tightest grip. The more you restrain ball’s "dancing" inside your hand, the more you'll force the rotor to accelerate. With my right hand (you may see the 15152/15322 video) I hold the ball ordinarily like you (with the counter inside my palm). With my left hand, I hold it with the counter outwards, because it just suits me better to hold it like this; it's not some kind of special technique.
Regards/Akis
-------------------------------------------------------
so, the moral is: "The grip is the key!"
I hope that info helps.
