Does anyone want to join in with an experiment? I'm convinced that the older 250Hz Powerballs, without the counter-weight, are faster than the newer ones. My first 250Hz Pro was an old one, and I've NEVER been able to achieve better scores on the newer ones, even though the newer ones are meant to be quicker.

What I was going to suggest was sending an old counter-weight-less Powerball to various people, to try for a week or two and to see if they can score higher on it than the newer Powerballs with counter-weights.

Obviously this will require some trust, but who wants to participate?

Seems to be a nice experiment.
One question, what does shipment to other people cost (about).

Within the Netherlands shipment costs around 5.50 euros. I am not aware of prices for shipment abroad.

Regards,

The Force

Good idea, but there is a problem, if your powerball is worn out, there is no chance to compare, and the more people who use it and the more it will wear out, there is therefore no comparison possible...

I disagree. The more I use my Powerballs the faster they go. I know that different people using them could cause adverse affects, but if it's only for a week or so I doubt it's going to be a problem.

As I've said, the very first time I used my old 250Hz Pro, (which was old and secondhand when I bought it!), I added about 300 to my record with the Neon, and a friend of mine, on his first attempt, added 1000 to his record with a Neon. I'd never used a new 250Hz Pro at that point, but even after over a year I can still repeatedly score more on my older one.

Even if just one person wants to give it a try then it'll put my mind at rest. So, The Force, if you want to try it then let me know.

(Of course, I'll do a big experiment first, before sending it out. My newest 250Hz Pro, with the counter-weight, does feel lighter and faster than my original "new" one. It could be that it's better...it could be just because I've been using the Metal a lot lately, so ANY 250Hz would feel light and fast compared to the Metal. But if I do a test and always achieve better scores on the older one, I'll send it to The Force to see if the same happens to him....and it's not too expensive to send of course!)

Cheers...that'd be good if it turns out to be interesting. i.e. if the older one really is faster. It's certainly louder, I know that for sure!

I'd be interested to hear from Mark actually...I think his Powerball might be one of the older ones with no counter-weight, as he's had it for so long.

Well..I would be glad to test your old powerball Adrenalin.

However, one concern arises in me now.

What happens if I would break the powerball? I mean....once in a while I "blow up" my rotors. After that the powerball starts to make a roaring sound and high speeds are impossible (remember the posts about tolerance of the rotor axis w.r.t. the rotor).

Best regards,

The Force
P.S. I will give you my postal address if you still want to send it around.

Then the experiment will be over. Confused

I would hope that Powerballs.com would replace the rotor...they've already once sent me a replacement when I had one that felt off-balance, and it was one of the older rotors. Stupidly I experimented on it, cutting off the fans to see if it would make it quicker and quieter...the latter it did, the former it didn't.

My other worry would be what if you did happen to improve your record by a factor of a few hundred, like I did. You'd not want to give it back!! Embarassed

Wink

Anyway, once I have the spare off my friend I'll run my own test, then if I can post constantly better scores with the old one I'll send it to you to play with.

Hi,

why those old powerballs are faster? I read somewhere Rory saying the new ones were faster.

What parts of the powerball have been changed to affect the speed? and what is the scientific explanation? anyone here expert in gyroscopes?

What is the reason that makes powerballs slower until they have been used for a while? is it the plastic ring that gets worn is such a way that slips in optim conditions over the plastic support?

Has anyone tried exchanging parts of powerballs, pieces of new ones and pieces of old ones, to increase performance? Smile

Pako.

Rory said the same thing to me, that the newer ones are faster. But my 2 or 3-year old 250Hz with no counter-weight is consistently faster than my 8-month old 250Hz with counter-weight. I have just got another even newer 250Hz, which feels light, but I'm yet to test it head-to-head with my old one.

I don't know why it should be faster, but without the counter-weight there's less overall weight to spin around I guess, and as it's slightly lighter the torque is slightly lower, therefore easier to spin fast. That's just my simple way of thinking about it...this experiment, with several people trying, might be proof. We'll see.

As for changing parts about, my very old 250Hz rotor is currently sitting in a much newer casing, because my old casing was so worn out.

Right, I ran a quick test earlier. Results below;

new 250 hz ---------- old 250 hz -------- % improvement
left --- right ---------- left --- right ------- left ---- right
11726 11550 -------- 12169 12061 ------ 3.77 -- 4.42
11896 12397 -------- 12439 12294 ------ 4.56 -- -0.84
12359 12338 -------- 12425 12526 ------ 0.53 -- 1.52
12410 12205 -------- 12656 12186 ------ 1.98 -- -0.16
12494 12360 -------- 12809 12242 ------ 2.85 -- -0.96
12537 12713 -------- 11910 12096 ----- -5.26 -- -5.10 Confused
11592 11168 -------- 12849 12131 ------ 10.84 -- 8.62
12393 12307 -------- 12937 12594 ------ 4.39 -- 2.33

Overall the old 250Hz is on average 2.09% faster

The Force could take his record from 14332 to 14631
Pako could take his record from 14462 to 14764
Obiw4n could take his record from 13720 to 14006

......possibly!

Of course, it may just be that my new 250Hz isn't broken in yet. This new one certainly does feel smoother and lighter than the previous new one I had, and nicer than the one I got my dad. It even feels lighter than my old one, from the tests above, but I just couldn't spin it faster. It's almost as though it's too smooth, and that the rotor spends too much time slipping and never really "bites" into the track and speeds up. The old one, even at low revs, feels a bit rougher, but I can tell that the rotor's rolling from a much earlier stage, rather than slipping.

Anyway, once I get another old one, this weekend, I'll run some tests with that one too, and then post the fastest one off to The Force next week.
