I tought we could maybe open a Topic about the "Edouard Technique" here...because there is a lot of discussion about it...
For those who don't know this particular Technique, it's just a way of handling a Powerball with a loosing grip so that the rotor axix stops spinning round in the inner shell.

Here's a video to show this, by Edouard obviously...:

http://bl4dem4ster.free.fr/edouard16079.avi

and a video which you probably never saw( special 90s hand dry technique):

http://bl4dem4ster.free.fr/ed.avi

I like this one

Very Happy Very Happy

The rules of the Powerballs.com scoreboard allow this technique, and Rory even recommends his, (he urged me to submit my 17392 which I did at a Chat evening the other week).

But I personally only use it for fun.

Well, I don't want to use Edouards technique for 2 reasons.

1) It ruins your powerball
2) It is way less difficult than keeping the powerball spinning and therefore it does not belong in an endurance session (which goal is to go as fast as possible for as long as possible).

Regards,

The Force

I would have to agree with you on this one, although i dont care if its allowed in the endurance scoreboard. In truth it will never be faster than driving the ball the whole time IMHO. If you are trained good enough you can drive the ball for the entire 90 sec. Just look at Akis, he drives the ball the entire time, as do you and i, and were are 3 and 4 on the scoreboard.

You are right about the nr3 and 4 position, but I was also referring to the transitions. In my humble opinion an exercise where you use normal technique in between transitions and Edouard's technique for the transition itself is the most ideal for high scores (Edouard style all the way is also something I don't believe in). You simply loos less rotations at the transitions.

The Force

Well that's not quite true...my record is with the technique, as is Edouard's, as is Sebastien's. Rory's done nearly 7000 in 30s with the technique. It's clearly faster. I have very little doubt that if I was on speed form I could blast through 18k with the technique.

I just cant call ~150 RPM difference definitly faster. It might help (a little) at the level we are performing at now (17k) but i dont think that it will at the higher levels. THe top 5 people dont use it except on maybe the hand switch in pako's case. As for rory doing almost 7000, im sure akis can do over 7000 and not use the technique.

Also if people are training with this technique they will have a hard time improving because it doesnt push the muscles as hard either.

But this is still just my opinion, i will admit that i could be wrong, if akis ever uses the technique and gets well over 20K with it or if you improve your score by 1000 with it soon, then i might tend to agree with you more. There is my challange PROVE me wrong Confused

Okay, but I'm very off form at the moment...will try and get a spare few hours over the weekend to train.

Once I've rested for a few weeks I'll try for some more records, including a new Edouard Technique record. However, I only like to do this on my old, knackered Powerball, (which I've just completed 10,000,000 revs on), and it vibrates very badly at over about 11,000 revs. Otherwise it can be quite smooth.

However, I did do a few 90s runs on my Metal, and averaged about 13100, then tried an Edouard Technique run and did about 13950. That's proof enough for me.

Mmm.....I did not reach higher scores with Edouard style..so it probably depends on your technique. Some techniques are more suitable for Edouard style and others don't.

I haven't tried much Eduard style, but I don't like it. I prefer not to rest between transitions and doing abrupt accelerations: it's bad for the lifetime of the powerball. But I think that changing powerball from one hand to another easily (which does not necessarily mean having a rest for your arms) is batter.

btw, TheForce, did u try changing powerball from one hand to another with the counter facing the palm on both hands?

I prefer not to do it too, but it does always produce higher scores for me.

However, I find it interesting that you say you don't like doing abrupt accelerations. You accelerate the ball VERY quickly when you're doing a speed run...you've admitted it yourself. Plus when you finish a speed or endurance run you allow the ball to continue spinning very fast while you hold the Powerball loosely, so that it doesn't move while you hold it up to the camera. That's exactly what you're saying isn't good for the ball. Confused

Yes, I do. However I only accelerate 2 times: one with left to get a nice speed and another with right hand to attempt record. I try to do a smooth transition, and never hear any weird sound that makes me think the powerball is in danger :-) I was referring to abrupt accelerations several times doing 90s, in those cases the pb axis has a lot of stress.

Did I say so? Well, I didn't mean that. When I hold the ball in front of camera, I use loose grip, which lets ball spin smoothly; some of my powerballs do weird sounds, in those cases, i grip it firmly. Am I doing something bad for my precious??? :-)

Well it's not exactly good for it to let it spin at around 12 to 13k while holding it loosely...it would decrease the lifespan of the rotor-support band.

I always stop my precious completely before loosening my grip. Smile
